The Beginning
So I started out with literally only the idea of what I wanted to create, as one does. So I looked to the games that I was inspired by to see if I could gather any information about what engines they used or anything else really. Well, the first game is all in Git, so it's not really possible for me to examine any of the actual code or assets there, but the other one had "made with Pixi.js" somewhere in its files, so I started there and downloaded it from their homepage. It's not actually an engine or anything, turns out lol. With some discussion with a real coding friend of mine I was walked through that it was basically something that converts HTML5 into JS, which made more sense at the time. I was hoping it was probably a whole engine for making a game exactly like the second game I'm taking inspiration from, but nah, I gotta get my hands in the coding aspect, which I'm optimistically excited for. From then on I downloaded some resources my buddy told me about and tried to wrap my head around how to actually use the damn thing. Haven't really gotten there yet. Watched part of a tutorial for making a slot machine and got the basic shit for what's an acceptable numerical input and what isn't, but didn't really feel like returning to it. Recently, started using a coding learning app for JS called Sololearn. It's pretty ad heavy and I sorta rushed through my first lesson but I'm gonna try to stick on it like I do with Duolingo. After that, I was thinking about how dissatisfied I was about only having Pixi.js to go off of, and decided to ask ChatGPT about engines for roguelikes, and lo and behold I was introduced to rot.js. It feels literally perfect for what I want to accomplish, and in combination with pixi.js I think I can really make something now. I wanted to get my ideas for it on paper so I'm starting to write a game design doc, which I interrupted to start this itch page. I'll probably end up posting it as well at some point. Maybe even in the next log. So, I want to try working on this project for an hour a day since I have plenty of time for it usually. Even if I just open the thing and stare at it for a while, it'll probably be better than not.
Things to remember:
Go over code monthly to sanity check stuff
Backups
backups for the backups
